TYPES OF IELTS EXAMS
General Training Module
This is taken by those who want to apply for skilled work abroad or permanent residency.
Academic Module
This is taken mainly by people who want to study abroad but more than that, it is required for professional workers such as nurses, doctors, teachers, engineers and accountants.
IELTS UKVI
This is the same with the previous two modules except that this is primarily the type of exam for UK applications as UKVI stands for UK Visas and Immigration. Test Format and content-wise, it is exactly similar to the other two. The only difference is its name and purpose.
IELTS Life Skills
This is required for those applying for a spouse visas which means they already have a husband or a wife in another country, specifically the UK, but they are asked to take this as a formality requirement. It only covers Listening and Speaking.
IELTS Sub-Tests / Structure of the Exam
Listening
Test format – (30 minutes) + (10 minutes extra transfer time for the paper format)
No. of questions: 40
Candidates are tasked to listen to 4 recordings of native English speakers and then answer a series of questions. The audio is played only once.
- Part 1 – a conversation between two people set in an everyday social context.
- Part 2 – a monologue set in an everyday social context, e.g. a speech about local facilities.
- Part 3 – a conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context, e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment.
- Part 4 – a monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture.
A range of accents might be heard including British, Australian, New Zealand, American and Canadian.
Reading
Test format – (60 minutes)
No. of questions: 40
Candidates are tasked to read 3 passages in a variety of topics sourced from authentic books, journals, magazines, newspapers, company handbooks and advertisements depending on the module being taken (Academic or General Training).
Academic Training module
This is taken by those aiming to study in English speaking countries or apply for a working permit but whose jobs fall under these categories: medical professionals (doctors and nurses), engineers, accountants, teachers and lawyers.
General Training module
This is a requirement for those aiming to migrate and apply for permanent residency in English speaking nations such as Canada, Australia or New Zealand or those who want to apply for work permits and other employment training opportunities abroad.
Writing
Test format – (60 minutes)
Two writing tasks are given to candidates which they need to complete in one hour. They control their own time so they are advised to allocate 20 minutes for the first task and 40 minutes for the second. The first task is different depending on the module being taken but the second task is similar for both modules.
Academic Training module
- Task 1 – you will be presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram and asked to describe, summarize or explain the information in your own words. You may be asked to describe and explain data, describe the stages of a process, how something works or describe an object or event.
No. of words – minimum 150
- Task 2 – you will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. Responses to both tasks must be in a formal style.
No. of words – minimum 250
General Training module
This is a requirement for those aiming to migrate and apply for permanent residency in English speaking nations such as Canada, Australia or New Zealand or those who want to apply for work permits and other employment training opportunities abroad.
- Task 1 – you will be presented with a situation and asked to write a letter requesting information, or explaining the situation. The letter may be personal, semi-formal or formal in style.
No. of words – minimum 150
- Task 2 – you will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. The essay can be fairly personal in style.
No. of words – minimum 250
Speaking
Test format – (11-14 minutes)
Candidates are assessed on their ability to use spoken English wherein their responses are recorded. This involves a face to face interview with an examiner.
- Part 1 – the examiner will ask you general questions about yourself and a range of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies and interests. This part lasts between four and five minutes.
- Part 2 – you will be given a card which asks you to talk about a particular topic. You will have one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. The examiner will then ask one or two questions on the same topic.
- Part 3 – you will be asked further questions about the topic in Part 2. These will give you the opportunity to discuss more abstract ideas and issues. This part of the test lasts between four and five minutes.
